“For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily.” - Colossians 2:9
--
In Christ we behold the fullest manifestation of the divine glory that ever the world was capable of receiving. The Godhead dwells in Him bodily. The beams of the Godhead are tempered in the human nature of Christ, so that we might look upon them and live. The glory of God in Its naked excellency would overwhelm us, but in Christ It shines with a soft and pleasant radiancy. The wisdom, power, holiness, justice, and goodness of God meet together in Christ as in a sweet harmony. All the attributes of God are glorified in the person of Christ as the Mediator. The justice of God is satisfied and the mercy of God is magnified.
The incarnation is the mirror wherein we behold the glory of God. Not the glory of God against us, but the glory of God for us. Not a consuming fire, but a comforting sun. It is a wonderful condescension that God should wrap Himself in our flesh so that sinners might behold His glory and not be destroyed by it. Christ is Emmanuel — God with us — yet Emmanuel in our nature that we may approach Him with confidence. The humanity of Christ is the veil which both covers and reveals the Godhead, so that we may see God saving us rather than condemning us.
Let us then labor to get a clear view of Christ by faith. A glimpse of His glory will humble us, ravish us, and transform us. The more we know Christ, the more we shall admire Him. The more we behold Him, the more we shall love Him. The saints will spend eternity discovering fresh wonders in Christ. Heaven itself is the full enjoyment of the glory of Christ. The happiness of heaven is but the outshining of Christ upon the soul.
